History

Ron and Tanda decided after looking at the enormous size of an Ostrich to raise Emus. Emus can be likeable. They peck at your glasses, buttons or jewelry. They love to be stroked on the neck and dance in an overhead spray of water. They also can be very dangerous if attacked from the front. They can run 30 to 40 mph.

We have been carving eggs for more than 8 years now. Ron says "it is always interesting when I start carving to see what color I end up with." The natural scenes are the most challenging and faces are even more challenging for him. Carving eggs is time consuming. The turbo-carver turns 350,000 to 400,000 rpm, so steadiness is needed and imagination is a must – especially if you make a wrong move.

Hand-Carving Eggs

Emu eggs are unusual in that they vary in color and texture. The eggs are larger than an avocado and are 3½” to 5½”. Every egg is different. The outside texture of the egg varies from very smooth to moon cratered bumpy or somewhere in between. The outside the egg can range in color from dark green to black.

As an artist it is beautiful to see what is underneath that outer shell. Beneath the dark avocado like exterior of the egg there are different layers of color. The second layer of the Emu egg is grey – if you can find it. If the artist is too heavy handed this layer can be gone without ever being seen. The seemingly thickest layer is the third one. This layer can be varying shades of green to blue green. This layer works well with sky and water scenes. The last layer is white, thin, and sometimes too thin. An egg with a lot of white carving is very soft and fragile to handle.

The aboriginal people carved tribal designs and animals on their eggs. The artist, with time and some patience, and imagination, could carve just about anything on an Emu egg.

Ostrich eggs are cream color outside and white inside. Because they lack the different colored layers they can be considered “boring”. However, Ostrich eggs are thick - so the artist is able to carve deep intricate designs. Sometimes the shell is painted for effect and contrast. The ostrich egg can make great decorative or night lights with a small battery operated bulb.

The hand-carved egg is a very beautiful object worthy of displaying on your mantle or in your curio cabinet. Egg art is now a world wide hobby. These eggs are great gifts or collectors items, beautiful, natural, and amazing. The photos on this web site are a sampling of some of the eggs Ron has carved and the photos show the eggs in stands that are attractive and yet do not take away from the artistic carving. We never glue our eggs on stands so you can find a stand that might fit your decor.

No two eggs will ever be the same - Emu or Ostrich.

Each egg is unique, hand-carved, dated, numbered, and initialed by Ron.
